Most memorable music experience?

There are too many to count but one of my favorites is meeting this little dude named Jaxon at the Ann Arbor Summer Festival and inviting him on stage to sing Folsom Prison Blues. If you were a tree, what kind of tree would you be and why?

I think I would be a palm tree because I love warm weather. What could be better than literally sitting in the sunshine every single day?? Ooh! Or maybe an olive tree! They live in hot weather too and provide delicious olive oil for the world. It’s like a metaphor for my music. Providing delicious tunes for the world. And I’m Greek too so that fits.  

 

Would you rather fight one horse-sized duck, or 100 duck-sized horses?

Why fight them?? When you can work together to take the horse-sized duck on tour and make killer money showcasing the weirdness. The duck and I would split the profits 50/50.

 

What is the funniest/best/scariest thing that has happened to you recently?

Every day is the funniest/best/scariest day. Funny because life is too short not to make jokes and laugh all the time. Best because every day is a gift that’s why they call it the present. Scariest because life is hard sometimes but totally worth it because being tough builds character. That was the absolute worst answer ever but it’s true!

 

Do you have any idea why tennis balls are fuzzy?

Because dogs love fuzzy things. Tennis balls are made for dogs right?

 

If you could only choose one song to play every time you walked into a room for the rest of your life, what would it be?

“I’m Too Sexy” by Right Said Fred. As I’m typing this I’m laughing and gyrating my hips at the same time at the thought of this actually happening.

 

Besides being a talented musician, what other talent(s) do you have?

I’m very talented at eating anything that is put in front of me. I am working on becoming tri-lingual. I am the master of puns. My skill-set runs deep as you can tell.  

 

If you could spend the day with anyone in the world, past or present, who would it be and why?  

Either meditating with the Dalai Lama in India or partying with Anthony Bourdain in Tokyo. Not on the same day preferably.

 

Bonus Questions:

A penguin walks through the door right now wearing a sombrero. What does he say and why is he here?

“Donde estoy?” (Where am I?) OR “Is it still Cinco de Mayo?”. Also who cares why he’s there, let’s celebrate! That would be awesome!

 

Who would win a fight between Spiderman and Batman?

I think Batman (Christian Bale, not Ben Affleck). He just seems more solid and has a lot more fire power. Webs are no match for billions!

 

What do you think of garden gnomes?

I think of Travelocity. Hahahaha. Does that make me a good American?

 

You’ve been given an elephant. You can’t give it away or sell it. What would you do with the elephant?

Ride it!!! I would sell my car, buy a trumpet, and ride the elephant everywhere. And blare the trumpet as we come into view! Her name would be peanut and she would be my new best friend. 🙂

Let’s start with the facts…

As we approach the start of the school year we are also thinking about student life including their health and wellbeing, it is good to realize the kinds of stress students face, and how some of that stress can become quite overwhelming around this time of year. It is estimated that from 20 to 40 percent of students experience from moderate to severe test anxiety on a regular basis, and over 60 percent suffer from test anxiety at least some of the time. Similar anxieties are experienced relating to final papers and homework in general, to school performance and the possibility of failure, in a particular course or as a student. Compounding all of this can be a myriad of other issues around personal and social life.

These anxieties can have a strong negative effect on a student’s test scores, grades, course completion and self-esteem, and can, by extension, have similar negative effects on the college or university itself, specifically regarding student retention and the school’s performance and rankings.

As the most highly-booked hypnotist in the college and university market, over the years I have come to understand these types of issues, and feel so blessed that my show can really help students feel better about themselves, reduce their anxieties and become more successful – in school and in life. And if they have a wonderful night of entertainment as well, so much the better.

Research confirms what I have long known and practiced: just how effective hypnosis can be in helping students. A study comparing various methods of treating test anxiety, including systematic desensitization, relaxation training, cognitive modification, attentional training, insight therapy, anxiety management training, and hypnosis, found that hypnosis was the most effective approach of them all, and could have a significant positive impact on a student’s anxiety and performance.

When students learn how to effectively deal with stress and anxiety, visualize better performance on tests and homework, identify and reduce negative self-thoughts, and take on other positive habits and tools, they will be happier and feel better about themselves and about school, they will enjoy higher test and course scores and become better, more effective students, and they will be much more likely to complete classes, stay in school and graduate.

Unfortunately, few students can achieve this without help, and many who suffer from test anxiety, or from other anxieties which are holding them back feel there is nothing they can do to improve the situation. Those who have heard of hypnosis may be reluctant to go to a stranger, or into a cold, clinical environment, and expose their anxieties and problems. And even if they might consider such an option, a truly effective hypnotist may simply not be available, or may be unaffordable.

This is where I come in, offering life changing workshops or even a night of hypnosis and comedy that is fascinating, fun and uproariously funny. I was recently named “Best Hypnotist in the World” by MTV Europe, Campus Activities Magazine’s “Entertainer of the Year” for 2016/2017, and the APCA 2017 “Entertainer of the Year” and “Hypnotist of the Year” in 2014 and 2017.

As gratifying as all of this recognition may be, much more important to me is, and always has been, students’ health and well-being. 3 steps to Mr. Rogers Orientation

Hey, Did you get a chance to see Won’t You Be My Neighbor?

I wasn’t a regular of Mr. Rogers, my show was Captain Kangaroo as a little one. But last weekend my friends prompted me to see the documentary on his life, so I went by myself hoping it wouldn’t be a waste of time.

Was I surprised! From the jump, my heart burst as I learned Mr. Rogers guiding philosophy. Those sock puppets with corny voices? On the real, they spoke about power, fear, assassination, and the war in Vietnam.

I found myself holding back tears to the point I almost gasp out loud. Laaawd, I didn’t expect any of this!

Mr. Roger’s casting of actors wasn’t the norm for the time either; gay, women, people of color were a real part of the neighborhood. His underlying theme: you are lovable just the way you are… mistakes, pain, bratty behavior, every part of you is lovable.

Mr. Rogers guiding mission made me think about the work you’re doing on campus. Helping students build, explore and find ownership and agency in their lives. What if you designed a MR. ROGERS STYLE ORIENTATION for Fall 2018!??  My 3-part planning prompts are below.

3 Steps to a Mr. Rogers Orientation

  1. As the program director/team leader create brave space by first sharing a story when you’ve felt powerless, afraid, or unsure. Talk about what’s really going on, especially in challenging times. Its guaranteed people are already feeling these things and ultimately will be grateful that you set the tone.
  2. By acknowledging their individual story. Sometimes it’s a simple as listening and/or sharing aspects of one’s story among peers can be incredibly powerful, bonds formed are the building blocks for commitment and positive social change.
  3. “The Dot Game” is great way to help others understand how we unconsciously and consciously separate and segregate into groups. Each time I’ve facilitated this exercise, I’m astounded by the revelations from participants.

Redefining Self Care

A look at body image, bad habits and true self care. 

The self care misconception

Oh, Self Care…how we love you! But do we really know what self care is?

Since the definition of self care is not one-size-fits-all, it can mean just about anything to anyone at any given time. With such an open interpretation its not hard to see how the term can be abused and even justify unhealthy/destructive behaviors.

Wait, what?

YES, its true. Before you say “Not ME!” let’s take a look at some “self care” habits that are really more harmful than good. Making that personal purchase splurge that puts a strain on other financial obligations, Watching the entire season of your fave Netflix series even though you have a mountain of stuff to do, Having that extra drink or two or three (or more) -hangover and work the next day be damned.

While this all seems pretty obvious, what about things that are good for you? There’s a gray area that can quickly turn from self care to self harm if not checked. We know things like going to the gym, saving money, and pursuing educational/work goals are great; but excessive exercise, extreme dieting, obsessing over body image, shutting out friends or loved ones and neglecting relationships to meet our goals crosses over into unhealthy territory.

So how do we know when we’ve crossed the line?

Well, self care is supposed to make us feel good. Its a tool to refresh our spirits and bring joy.

If you find yourself feeling more empty or have created more stress by treating yourself, chances are you are no longer practicing a healthy brand of “care”.   

We wouldn’t let a friend continually make PLDs (Poor Life Decisions) or watch silently as they form a collection of detrimental habits in the name of self care. Why the hell should we allow this for ourselves? We need to be our own ally and best friend first and foremost

This can take a little work, especially if you’ve wandered down the path of self destruction for a bit. Luckily, there are many ways to repair and build a healthy self relationship. Try out a few self empowerment & help books, attending a self hypnosis workshop or a lecture on self love/body image to get you started.  Working in a group setting is extremely helpful since it connects you with others who are facing similar issues. Think of what positive advice you would give to a struggling friend or what kind words you could share with them; then face a mirror and apply those same caring ideas to yourself.

The bottom line here is that true self care is LOVING and CARING for yourself.

Whatever that might look like to you, just be sure that it enhances your wellbeing and promotes positive growth.

4 tips to avoid burnout!

Nothing beats a job well done…except when it leaves you feeling completely burnt out.

When feelings of burnout start to occur, short-term solutions such as taking a vacation can certainly help, but the relief is usually temporary. To avoid burnout, focus on strategies that will have a deeper impact, and create lasting change.

 

Here are 4 tip to consider when you start feeling the burn:

1.K.I.S.S. (Keep it scheduled and simplify.)

While you may have a mile long task list, trying to jam it all into your day planner may make you sacrifice essential free time and feel more overwhelmed. Instead, Find a daily routine that is easy to follow and then schedule your top work priorities accordingly. If the thought of “free time” sounds unproductive, remember that it acts as a buffer; to give you the time and space needed to tackle any unforeseen circumstance that pop up without putting you in a time crunch.  

2. Delegate

Part of the simplifying process from above is to delegate. When looking at your priorities, figuring out when and where you can delegate is key to making work assignments (and your schedule) more manageable. 3. Rediscover Your Purpose

Look at the deeper impact of what you do every day; how does your work make life better for other people? How could you add more meaning to what you do every day? Focusing on the bigger picture can recharge your motivation meter, giving you the energy you need to take on another day of being awesome.

4.Turn Off “Work Mode”

Remember the daily routine from step 1? Make sure that includes time to step away from the daily grind! Give yourself time to enjoy your favorite hobby, exercise, or just relax. This really serves to keep your work/life balance in check and prevent future burn out.

“The anger sharks are swimming in my head”

We’ve all been there at some point – or even regularly – in our lives. And its no wonder why…with increasingly high expectations, never ending workload, and pressure to live up to the “highlight reels” of success we see constantly on social media. Finding yourself being stressed out and irritable is never a fun time. Unless you’re the Incredible Hulk and can use your anger to help fight the forces of evil, being perpetually miffed doesn’t do much good.

 

 

Here’s 4 steps you can take to get yourself back on track.

 

Acknowledge your emotions

Ok, you’re pissed off…now what? Take some time to acknowledge your emotions and feel mad. Set a timer for 5 minutes and feel it out. You might find that allowing yourself a moment to feel angry instead of trying to brush it off or cover it with a smile can prevent a single negative experience from taking over the whole day and creating even more problems.

 

Ask yourself why?

Anger is an emotional indicator; like a human check engine light, it tells us when things need fixed. But just like the check engine light, it doesn’t tell us exactly what the problem is. Go ahead and ask yourself why you’re mad. Often times there’s more than one answer and it can be helpful to make a list or even a flowchart to find the root of what’s really setting you off. Additionally, identifying the cause gives us perspective to our emotional response and makes finding solutions more manageable.

 

Find a Solution

You’ve found the underlying cause, or at least a prime suspect; are you surprised by what you discovered? Your feeling could be a direct result of mistreatment or wrongdoing OR stemming from stress, lack of sleep, frustration, fear, or just being plain ol’ hangry. Whatever the reason (or combination of reasons), rest assured there’s a way to work through it. Think up a few solutions (not revenge plots) that could work for you and give them a try. Remember to be patient with yourself and others during the process. And If you find the issue at hand is bigger than you expected, its always ok to ask for help.

 

Take Action!

The smallest actions can make a huge impact when it comes to diffusing your crappy mood. If you’re able, begin taking steps to put your solution to work. This could mean setting up a time to talk it out with a friend or counselor or adding some extra “me time” to your schedule. Actually making plans will encourage you to follow through with getting what you need even after you’ve calmed down.  But what if you need a quick fix to keep the anger sharks in check? Try these techniques!

  • Go for a walk
  • Treat yourself to your favorite coffee or tea
  • Listen to some soothing music or an audiobook/TED Talk
  • Do a random act of kindness
  • Meditation or self hypnosis
  • Find something to make you laugh
  • Be creative: doodling/coloring
  • Aromatherapy with essential oils or other pleasing scents  


The takeaway here is to remember that anger along with other negative (and positive) emotions are all part of being human. While we can’t and shouldn’t avoid our feelings, there are ways to redirect their path. It is totally possible to go from bad to better instead of bad to worse.
