Jinahie

Jinahie (“my wings” in Arabic) is an Egyptian-American performance artist, educator, and social justice activist. Now in the fifth year of her national tour, Jinahie performs at colleges and universities across the country. In the process, she has collected hundreds of Potluck Poems, a collaboration among strangers in which a poem is completed during live performances by the contribution of a line from each audience member. Jinahie has performed at TEDxFoggyBottom, Sundance Film Festival, the U.S. Department of Education, United Nations, Smithsonian Institution, the Kennedy Center, and was a featured performer during a showing of the Pulitzer-Prize winning drama, Ruined, during which she had the honor of performing for Michelle Obama. Jinahie has shared the stage with the likes of Lupe Fiasco, The Roots, Smokey Robinson, Russell Simmons, and Angela Davis. In Jinahie’s spare time, she enjoys learning useless facts, feeding her carnivorous plants, and people watching people who people watch other people.

Quotes

“Jinahie, a spoken word artist, had the crowd enthralled and touched. Her heartfelt recitation produced the standing ovation of all standing ovations. She recited a poem … and had much of the audience either wiping away tears or trying desperately not to become emotional. After Jinahie had left the stage, they had to bring her back out to settle the crowd down and get them back in their seats.” -We Believe Foundation

“Jinahie’s spoken word performance is absolutely fantastic!” –Goucher College Programming Board

“Jinahie has a great energy presence about her and a talent for connecting with students, whether it be through her spoken word or through one on one conversation before and after her performance. She was a delight to have on our campus and added a special spark to our event.” -Stevens Institute of Technology
